WHAT WE DO

Our Work

BEACH PATROLS

We set up a beach morning and night patrol routine to monitor turtle landings and make sure that their natural nesting cycle is left untouched and unharmed. These female turtles are left undisturbed during their process of searching for a spot on the sandy beach above high-tide water line, body pitting and chambering, and finally laying their eggs.

NEST RELOCATION

Turtle eggs are relocated to our hatchery, this is done to ensure the sea turtle eggs are safe from poachers and natural predators.

HATCHERY MANAGEMENT

Hatcheries must be observed constantly, the area must be kept clean and checked for predators, such as red ants or crabs. We monitor and visually observe the nest for when the emergence happens.

HATCHLINGS RELEASE

Most hatchling turtles emerge during the night or early morning, KT team assures the safe passage of the hatchlings to the sea.

NEST EXCAVATION

After the hatchlings have emerged from a nest, this is excavated so that contents are examined and counted in order to determine hatching success rate and to evaluate why some eggs didn’t hatch.

DATA COLLECTION

Kapas Turtles collects data of every nesting, relocation, incubation, release and excavation, this includes variables such as: timings of the initial nesting, the transfer to the hatchery, the hatching, the release to the sea as well as on the morphology of the population. It is very important to record data accurately to create a comprehensive database of each turtle species that nests on Kapas island.
